Hey. So before I head out to spend time with family until next Wednesday, I just wanted to share another update on the quick Share work.
So, the previous loom I sent out was exploring this idea of being able to quickly share to a space with a click.
So if I click on All All Notion, it says Shared and a Toast displays to tell you that it's been shared with All Notion.
And then similarly, via the larger Share sheet, same pattern where recommendations, instead of appending to the field like I previously explored, and like we tested in research, I was exploring consistency there where we're instantly sharing.
So I click on the plus a Toast displays that has been shared and the state changes here. I think one tricky part with this approach that Christina helped me realize, and that I've been talking with Laura and the Spaces team about as well, just because of the complexity, is the confirmation state.
So when we display these toasts, I think if we go this route where we're instantly sharing, well, it might feel faster, especially in this context.
Like, it could feel faster if you just have to click this as many times as you'd like and it's sharing it, and then you press done.
I don't think that trade offs worth maybe the complexity. Now that I've kind of thought about a couple of different approaches with toast.
So, for example, Laura and I were talking about the potential need to batch these toasts. Like, for example, if I clicked All Notion, but then a couple of seconds later, I clicked Team Revenue.
Do we actually wait to send out the first toast? And how complex would that be? Especially with a list that you can scroll through?
And I think the answer is quite complex. So, with that in mind I explored the other approach, which is kind of making the drop down similar to what Lisa had previously, but then in a way that feels closer to where the Share sheet was when we were doing usability testing with it.
And then visually, they feel similar. So I'll just show what it looks like. So you open this UI, you see search at the top just like I showed previously, if you click something like All Notion, it checks it and says Share instead of Shared.
And then the Share button goes from disabled to enabled. And then if I were to go down and tap another project or another space, rather like Project X, it would do the same thing where it says Share and then a check display.
The behavior would work the same way in actually, let me finish this out. So if I tap Share here, then the toast is sent out and it says a video was shared to two spaces or three spaces, or however many you selected.
It feels a lot simpler, I think, than the quick Share approach that I was exploring from a confirmation standpoint. So appreciate that feedback.
Christina and then the other thing is, we update the context here to, say, shared with two spaces. And then if you were to click into this, we display at the very top the two spaces in this example that I've shared with that I can unselect, and then I could continue to go through this list and share with more spaces.
The idea being that as we introduce scrolling, we also have to introduce what's the word? A way to understand which spaces have I already shared with?
So, with that in mind, I'll also share the larger version of this. So, if I were to go into more Share options with this approach and tap all notion, instead of it being an Instant Share, when you tap the plus, it appends it to the field.
And then the Share button, just like the smaller drop down, goes from disabled to enabled. And then what I have here is I'm replacing the previous space that I just added here, All Motion, with a new recommendation that you can also add if you'd like.
I'm not sure if we can do that. Alternatively, we could reduce the recommendations down to two from three. But I thought this would potentially be a more elegant solution.
And then when you added all the recommended spaces that you'd like, and then you enter all the manual entries that you'd like, you then press Share once, and then just like the smaller drop down, you see a toast and you see the spaces or space in this example that you've shared with.
And it replaces the recommendations. So, overall, when kind of comparing these two and thinking about how similar this approach is to what we tested in research for this portion of the UI, I do think this approach for both pieces, quick Share and the full Share makes sense, where we basically send the invite out once once someone has explicitly tapped Share here or Share here.
I think that all makes sense. One thing I'm a little worried about is the Quick Share UI has I mean, the Share project in general has just blossomed into this big project, and I'm doing this really fast and juggling this with other projects.
So, Lisa and Stephanie, if you're watching this, I would love just take a look at this, think about some potential edge cases.
And even if you don't have time to take them on, just like, document them if you can, just to help me kind of wrap this up when I'm back, if you don't have a chance to you to pick it up when I'm gone, but let me know what you think and have a great weekend since I'm out starting tomorrow.
Thanks. Bye.
