The shopkeeper places Stumpkin on a shelf days before Halloween, after a pumpkin friend becomes a high jack o lantern across the street. People come and go as Halloween approaches, and Stumpkin is nearly chosen but then left behind when a baby changes their mind and a boy takes another pumpkin. On Halloween night, the shop closes and the shopkeeper carries Stumpkin away, reassuring that he already has a home and is very happy.
