Atlassian & Loom Over the Years

Today, we’re announcing that Loom has entered into an agreement to be acquired by Atlassian. This feels like a long time coming. From day one Atlassian has been one of Loom's earliest adopters and biggest believers. Actually, it was day five, following our launch in June 2016 when the first Atlassian employee started recording with Loom. They went on to be the first company to purchase a Loom license for every employee, a special moment for us as a company.

We started getting to know Scott and Mike over four years ago, and they have been incredible mentors ever since. From our shared product-led growth (“PLG”) roots, to our closely aligned missions to empower teams anywhere and everywhere, we couldn’t think of a better home for Loom. We’ve been working hard for the last few months to pave the way for this transaction and we couldn’t be more excited to finally share the news with the world.

Loom’s Origin Story & Mission

Taking a step back for a moment. Eight years ago, we saw video increasingly used in our personal lives, yet it was nowhere to be seen in our work lives. Through a series of pivots, we discovered day to day communication with video was a huge pain point. Clunky recorders, long wait times to upload, terrible video consumption experiences (watch at 1x 😬), and nothing for collaboration over video. It was crystal clear to us that if we could make video fast, simple, and purpose built for work it would unlock immense value for individuals, teams and organizations working together around the world. Today, we are proud to say that we’ve made significant headway providing Loom to 25+ million registered users who have recorded ~1.5 billion minutes across 200k+ paid customers globally.

It’s incredible to think about the opportunity ahead. The most important, universal skill for humans is communication and in an increasingly distributed world, the need for efficient, effective, and expressive forms of communication continues to grow. Our mission is to empower effective communication via video messages. We believe joining forces with Atlassian and their two decades plus of building world class products for work accelerates our ability to achieve this in a meaningful way.

We wanted to take a moment to thank all the Loommates (current and former), our customers, our investors, and our board members who helped us reach this milestone. It is far from the end of the Loom story, but each of you believed in us and the product long before Loom became a verb and a noun (“send me a loom” or “just loom me”). We are so grateful for each and every one of you.

What Loom & Atlassian Will Do Together

We’ve said to Atlassian many times that we aspire to make this one of the best acquisitions of all time. We envision a world where every Atlassian customer can tap into the value of Loom. We will build deep integrations across the Atlassian ecosystem to bring instant, magical video messages to transform the way teams work together.

We will also continue to innovate on our standalone offer of simple, intuitive video messaging while building critical workflow integrations beyond Atlassian and a next-gen editing suite that requires no editing skills. Not to mention, we’ve only scratched the surface on what is possible at the intersection of generative AI and video.

While we have big ambitions to expand the Loom product and platform, our customer experience will continue to be as seamless as possible and there will be no disruption to service. If you are already an Atlassian customer, which many of you are, we will work towards Loom being part of Atlassian’s integrated offering. We will, of course, continue our support of students and teachers with the Loom for Education offering.

We have been using Atlassian software since we were fresh out of college. When we started Loom, we studied Atlassian as the innovators of the product-led growth motion. It is an incredible opportunity and honor to help Atlassian unleash the potential of every team around the world. We look forward to the years ahead and continuing to serve our amazing customers.
